What Thousands of Conversations Reinforced This Year

by placers on December 19, 2025 in Outside Insights

A reflection on ownership, leadership, and what actually moved the needle this year

When you spend a year in conversation with leaders, professionals, and thinkers across industries, as I have through Outside Insights and Placers, you start to notice what actually sticks.

Not the trends.
Not the headlines.
The patterns.

And the clearest pattern this year was this: the people who are doing well aren’t waiting for certainty. They’re taking ownership of their mindset, their growth, and how they show up for others.

That idea came up again and again, starting with how we think.

In one conversation with Wes Bowman, we talked about how easily people give their circumstances too much power. The reminder was simple: the way we interpret what’s happening often matters more than what’s actually happening. The leaders and professionals who moved forward this year weren’t the ones with perfect conditions, they were the ones who stayed intentional about how they responded.

That same sense of ownership showed up in nearly every leadership conversation. Whether it was Jonathan Stanley talking about developing people over time instead of waiting for “perfect” talent, or Bryan Deptula emphasizing the importance of doing your own inner work, the message was consistent: leadership isn’t something you perform. It’s something you practice, starting with yourself.

We heard a similar theme in conversations about success and value. Bob Burg’s story about the early rejection of The Go-Giver was a reminder that impact usually comes before recognition. The people who are building lasting careers and organizations aren’t chasing outcomes; they’re focused on contribution, trust, and relationships. The results tend to follow.

And underneath all of it was a quieter but powerful idea that surfaced more than once: no one else is coming to write your story for you. Whether it was career pivots, leadership decisions, or moments of realignment, people were choosing intention over autopilot, deciding what matters and acting accordingly.

Carry This Forward

If there’s one takeaway I’m bringing into 2026, it’s this:

Ownership beats waiting. Every time.

When you take responsibility for how you think, how you lead, and how you create value, momentum has a way of finding you, even in uncertain times.

As you reflect on the year behind you and think about what’s ahead, I’d encourage you to revisit an episode of Outside Insights that stuck with you, or listen to one you missed. These conversations are meant to be returned to, especially when you’re navigating change.

Thank you for being part of this community. I’m grateful for the conversations we’ve shared, and excited for the ones still to come.

Until next time, friends,
Chris
