Athletes, singers and actors/actresses have them. Performers spend all of their time honing their skills and perfecting their craft while someone else helps guide their career. They go to their career agent for advice, counsel, and opportunities because they lack the know-how or the time to do it themselves.
What about us mere mortals? Today’s workforce and workplace realities are changing at a breakneck pace, and it’s hard to manage one’s own career alone.
Yet most of us do this for our whole careers – act as our own career agents. We must develop our skills, practice our craft, seek more knowledge AND we must keep our networking and career management. It’s hard to be a good engineer, customer service person or supervisor, and to stay sharp on plotting out what jobs, classes and companies are best for you.
Why not refocus your lens on your career the way we all leverage other advisory/ agents for other life events?
– We don’t buy houses without any help (most of us, anyways).
– We don’t self-represent when a lawyer is best right?
– Few of us can do our own taxes or accounting. There is too much to keep in mind!
Listen as podcast regular Alan Burkhard dives deep into a rather simple yet surprisingly radical concept: How to manage your career over a lifetime and select a profession that fits you.
For today, think of Alan as your “career agent”. Then consider who else might be able to help you on your journey.
Need help picking a career agent? Feel free to reach out to me and I will do my best to help you on your journey!
