This week offers a necessary, intentional break. Use the slower pace to reflect honestly, recharge fully, and set yourself up for a focused, powerful year-end finish.
The calendar says it’s Thanksgiving. For most of us, that means a few days off from the daily grind, quality time with family, and a well-deserved break.
For any high-performer, whether you’re an entrepreneur, a team leader, or someone pursuing a significant personal goal, this week marks the start of your Strategic Off-Season.
Just like an elite athlete uses this time to recover and strategically build fundamental strength, you need to use this slower pace to reflect and recharge so you can finish the year strong. It’s a chance to step away from the noise and gain essential clarity.
The Opportunity to Reflect
In our always-on world, true reflection is a competitive advantage. Thanksgiving offers a natural moment to hit the pause button. You don’t need a formal strategy session; you just need to carve out a few quiet minutes.
If this year has been challenging, and for many it has been, it is even more important to look back with honest curiosity rather than judgment.
Ask yourself these simple questions to guide your reflection:
- Where was I energized? (Identify the moments or tasks that genuinely propelled you forward.)
- Where was I drained? (Identify the people, tasks, or mindsets that acted as unnecessary anchors.)
- What is the one thing I learned this year that I can never unlearn?
Writing down these answers is the crucial first step. You can’t chart a better course if you refuse to look at the map you’ve already traveled.
Recharge and Reinvest
Recharging isn’t about just sleeping in; it’s about replenishing the strategic and emotional tanks. As you pause, remember that your strength depends on your network, your personal board of advisors (Connectors, Challengers, Truth-Tellers).
A simple act of gratitude this week is the best way to reinvest in that network.
Action Step: Spend 15 minutes intentionally sending one or two specific, personalized messages. Avoid sending a generic holiday text. Share with someone why their tough feedback this year was crucial to your growth, or how their support helped you get through a tough period.
Gratitude strengthens the relationship, affirms their vital role in your life, and helps both of you feel prepared to end the year on a positive note.
By being intentional about your pause and reflection this week, you aren’t slowing down; you are building the necessary resilience and clarity to succeed through the end of the year.
“The moment you confuse ‘rest’ with ‘doing nothing,’ you lose the competitive advantage of the off-season. True rest is strategic reflection that leads to focused action.”
This week, dedicate 30 minutes to intentional rest and reflection. Promise yourself that. What is the most important lesson you will carry from this year into the next? Share your answer in the comments, I’d love to read it.
As Thanksgiving approaches, I was proud to contribute to WDEL’s recent Feed a Friend drive benefiting the Food Bank of Delaware. While that drive is now complete, the need is ongoing. If you’re looking for a powerful way to make an impact this holiday season, please consider supporting the Food Bank of Delaware directly.
Until next time, friends,
Chris
