Move Pebbles, Not Mountains: The Secret to Reaching Massive Goals

by placers on July 31, 2026 in Blog, Outside Insights

We just sealed our next six-year vision at Placers in a time capsule. Here is why big, scary goals aren’t really about the destination: they are about who you become along the way.

In boardroom meetings and corporate slides, you hear the acronym thrown around all the time: BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal).

It has almost become a corporate cliché. Most organizations pick a shiny revenue target or an arbitrary headcount number, slap it on a slide deck, and call it a day. But if I am being honest, most people completely miss the point of what a true BHAG is supposed to do.

A real BHAG isn’t just about the “what.” It is about the “who.” Who do you and your team have to become to make that goal a reality?

When you set a genuinely audacious goal, you are admitting something important. Your current self, with your current habits, comfort zones, and ways of thinking, just isn’t equipped to reach it yet. The goal exists to force a transformation.

Why We Sealed Our Future in a Time Capsule

Last week at our Placers Town Hall, we officially launched our next chapter: Mission 2032: Growth with Purpose.

Our goal? To impact 500,000 people across our region over the next six years. Not just through jobs placed, but through one-on-one coaching, candidate toolkits, community support, and insights that elevate lives.

It is a massive, intimidating number. It makes me excited, and yes, it makes me a little bit nervous too.

To ground us in this vision, we did something unique with the team instead of just running through slides. Every single person in the room took a card and wrote down what they want the Placers Legacy to be when we look back six years from now. We talked about the real problems we want to solve, how candidates will feel treated, and how our community will be fundamentally better off because we existed.

Then, we gathered together and sealed those promises inside a physical Time Capsule that we will not open until 2032.

A physical ritual like a time capsule forces you to pause. It moves a vision out of the abstract and places it right in front of you. It acts as a North Star, a filter that creates absolute clarity. In a world full of a thousand daily distractions, your BHAG tells you what to say yes to, and more importantly, what noise you must say no to.

We Can’t Just Work Harder. We Have to Think Differently.

Reaching 500,000 people isn’t about running faster on the same old treadmill. We cannot simply work harder or do “one more thing” using old methods.

To achieve real transformation, we have to invent new ways to solve the staffing industry’s bad habits, which have been accepted for far too long:

  • Transactions over relationships: Treating people like digital resumes instead of human beings with real potential.
  • Brute-force volume: Relying on outdated volume tactics and manual labor rather than embracing advancing technologies.
  • Short-term fixes: Placing someone in a seat today without caring if they thrive tomorrow.

We are actively choosing to think differently. By embracing modern tools, advancing technologies, and fresh ideas, we are redesigning how our industry serves people.

How to Move the Mountain: Pebbles, Rocks, and Boulders

Even with innovation, here is where most people fail when facing a big goal: they stare at the mountain and forget to look at their feet.

Six years feels like a marathon. Helping 500,000 people feels like an entire mountain range. You cannot move a whole mountain at once. You have to learn the project management of a dream. (We explored a similar idea in our past piece, Your Culture of One: A Guide to Living with Intention, on how massive long-term outcomes are simply the result of consistent, daily personal habits).

You build or break down the mountain by managing your daily output, shifting pebbles, rocks, and boulders.

  • Pebbles: What is the single, unglamorous, 10-minute habit you can do today that moves the needle just one inch?
  • Rocks: What is the one extra coaching call or candidate review you can complete this afternoon?
  • Boulders: What is the big strategic technology or innovation initiative you can push across the line this month?

You move your pebbles and rocks every single day, tackle the boulders together, and eventually, you look up and realize you have built a whole new landscape.

Is Your Goal Big Enough to Demand Growth?

This mindset isn’t just for business. I hold personal BHAGs for my health, my family, and my own personal development. Every single one of them demands that I abandon old, easy rituals and adopt new ones.

Whether you are leading a company of hundreds, managing a team, or elevating your own career, ask yourself this today: Is your vision big enough to demand a better version of you?

If your goals feel safe and comfortable, you are standing still. If they make you a little bit nervous, congratulations: you are exactly where you need to be.

Now, I would love to ask you: What is the North Star forcing you to grow today?

Until next time,

Chris
