Superheroes of comic books and Marvel movies wear costumes and save the world from evil. Most come from humble beginnings and experience the injustices of their world first-hand. Their experiences forge their character and will in ways that enable them to later protect and fight for the rights of others. Think of Superman as he helps save the earth or Wonder Woman as she helps win the world war. This was not their fight, but as heroes, they did the right thing.

Today we can be heroes without donning tights and capes.  We need more heroes any way we can get them.

In the year 2020, we have heroes that go to work while battling against an invisible enemy in COVID-19.  First, the front lines were today’s medical workers and all the essential workers that kept food on our table and the necessities of modern life operating while many of us stayed in lockdown. Now, we have heroes that are going back to work or getting a new job. Each day heroes are helping organizations rebuild or retool as we navigate difficult times.

At Placers, our team of heroes is doing all we can to help people get back to work through our Act of Kindness Program.  Click here if we can help you or someone you know.

Many heroes are volunteers.  They know they can help others and help themselves in the process. Do you want to feel better about yourself or your situation? Do something for someone else! Helping others can help you get “out of your own head” or situation, even if it’s for a brief period of time.

A Rotarian is a great example of an everyday hero who gives to others. Rotary International, is a service organization whose stated purpose is to bring together business and professional leaders to provide humanitarian service and to advance goodwill and peace around the world. Rotary is filled with individuals who live by their motto of “service above self”. So, be like a Rotarian. Give your time, talents, or resources to help others in need.

And, of course, we have heroes that stand up for a cause they are passionate about.  What matters is that you stand for something. Right now we have an opportunity to learn,  to grow, and to change our way of thinking; and to affect change. Unfortunately, our world is in pain. But, it’s our world and we need heroes to get involved and to take action.

What can you do? You can give more, you can learn more, you can change your perspective, and you can have tough conversations.

We all can improve our world if we are open to change and giving to others through our thoughts and our actions.

Will you join me and be a hero?
