Think Outside the Box When it Comes to Job Search Opportunities
The job searching process can be frustrating and seem endless. Chances are if you feel like you’re not getting the results you desire for the amount of time you are putting into your search, the problem is in your approach. During those moments of feeling as though your search isn’t making the strides you had hoped for, it’s important to take a step back and try to think outside of the box.
Here are three ways to think outside the box during your search:
Get offline. It’s no secret that LinkedIn, CareerBuilder, and other various technology tools have the potential to help you find your next job. However, remember that these aren’t the only tools. Try attending local networking events to build your communications skills and learn more about the industry in which you are interested. You never know who you’re going to meet and you could even make a connection with an open job opportunity.
Strategically market your skills. Make a list of all of the companies in your area that hire for the industry or position that you wish to be hired for. Call each of the companies one by one with your 30 second elevator pitch and introduce yourself to the appropriate people. Utilize this list like it is a campaign—share your story and showcase your skill set to hiring managers. You might just end up scheduling an interview!
Be personal. Although it’s important to know standard industry terminology, make sure you don’t sound like a robot when writing your cover letter or making connections. Hiring managers are looking for cultural fits as well as star employees so make sure all of your personal skills shine along with your industry knowledge.
Although you will run into challenges along the way during your job search, remember to be proactive and persistent so you can set yourself up for success. Even if you don’t hear back from the places you apply, you can gain valuable experience, learn more about the process, and decide next steps to take.
