Where is your future employee? Your company’s future temporary professional is sitting somewhere, contemplating their next career move. What will s/he do first to let the world know that they are there and ready to be hired? Who will s/he turn to? Staffing Industry Analysts surveyed 3,300 temporary workers and discovered the answer to this question.

  • 29% of workers turn to Monster
  • 27% seek out Indeed
  • 21% log in to LinkedIn
  • 21% call on Careerbuilder
  • 11% roll up their sleeves on Dice.com
  • 7% use Craigslist
  • 3% look to Facebook

Monster or Indeed is the most used site for all occupational groups except for the educator/trainer/librarian category, which prefers LinkedIn. One other group that does not fit the mold is healthcare workers. Your future healthcare temp does not rely on the job boards and social media networks the way the rest of your candidate pools might.

SIA found that the “average healthcare worker used 1.2 sites when looking for a job, compared to the average among non-healthcare temps of 1.6 sites.” And a fair number of healthcare workers (10%) do not use job boards or social media sites at all. Comparatively, only 2% of the non-healthcare temporary workers reported that they did not use such sites as a job seeker. What about other occupations you ask? Here are the top 3 most used job boards by profession in order starting with most used:

  • Engineers: Monster, LinkedIn, Dice
  • Business & Financial Professionals: Monster, Indeed, LinkedIn
  • Legal Professionals: Indeed, Monster, CareerBuilder
  • Office & Administrative Professionals: Monster, Indeed, Careerbuilder
  • Sales: Indeed, Monster, LinkedIn
  • IT Programmers: Monster, Dice, LinkedIn
  • Other: Monster, Careerbuilder, Indeed

So what does this tell us?

  • Most of them are going to be found at your local (zip code search) Monster or Indeed hangout.
  • Unless your business is in healthcare – you will need to turn to your local staffing agency and avoid the online space as healthcare workers appear more likely to rely on staffing agencies (14%) to secure employment than are workers in other occupations (3%).
  • Dice is an additional resource for your more technical skill sets such as IT programmers/project managers (38%) and Engineers (29%).
  • And you should only turn to Craigslist if you are looking for administrative professionals (20%), legal professionals (17%), or Sales professionals (11%).

THAT is where your future employee is hanging out.
